Jill’s two-story unit in the heart of Christchurch has been her sanctuary for over 40 years. Built in the 1970s, her home is typical of many of that era with its distinctive Summerhill Stone and plasterboard façade – but with little to no insulation in the walls. That meant Jill faced a perennial challenge that many homeowners know all too well – the biting chill of winter. But that was set to change when Jill heard about Insulmax®.
An unexpected breakthrough
Despite their best efforts to ward off the cold, including investments in double glazing and new carpeting, Jill and her partner Marion were frustrated with the persistent draft and lingering chill in their home.
“As we’re getting older, we’re really feeling the cold in winters. The double glazing and new carpet have helped, but not as much as we expected,” says Jill.
It was after chatting with a friend who had recently had Insulmax® installed that Jill decided to look into it for herself.
“To be honest, I was thinking it would be a last resort, but really it should have been the first step!” she says.

“Every day we come home and it's just wonderful. Now, we can actually keep all the doors open, and it's an even temperature right throughout the house,” says Jill. “Whereas before the installation, our little room downstairs where we watch TV had to continuously have the door shut to keep the warmth in. And we would probably have had the heat pump on by now, but we haven't had to use it yet.”
As an added bonus, Jill and Marion noticed their home was quieter too. “We get quite a bit of road traffic nearby which can get quite loud. But once we'd had the insulation fully done, we certainly noticed the difference in how much quieter it is.”
